I Just Want a Scarf, Dammit

Last winter, my friend Cassandra taught me out to crochet. At the time, it went well. She moved to Florida over the summer and gave me all of her crocheting yarn and needles. I’ve been wanting to crochet for years because I like the idea of being crafty and it’s one less needle than knitting, so in theory it should be easier.

Except I can’t remember how to go to the second row. It keeps knotting. I’ve tried to follow videos on YouTube and it doesn’t help. I’m, um, a hands-on learner, okay?

So if anyone knows anyone who wants just a single long crochet chain, let me know, I can hook them up (har, I’m not funny). Or if they want to individual friendship braclets, it’s a stretch, but it could work.

Sigh. I just want to be able to keep my neck warm myself. And give away something at Christmas besides cookies.

My gram crochets blankets constantly, so I asked her a few years ago how to do it. She showed me how to do the chain, and then said to keep going.
“How long do I go?” I asked.
“You just keep going,” she said.
So I kept going. Long enough that the chain wrapped around me three times. I finally asked her, “Gram, do I get to make the second row yet?”
“Not yet,” she replied, “keep going.”
I stopped going. Maybe this is crochet karma- and I should have kept going?

Hah! That’s great! I can’t crochet and I can barely knit. Good luck though, the chain looks great!

I learned how to knit a few years ago, and then stopped when I had kids. I really have to pick it up again — and probably learn all over again, too. Good luck!

ciao,
rpm

Hack Pittsburgh occasionally offers knitting/crocheting workshops. I can’t crochet, but I do knit a mean scarf!

ohhh I used to crochet but I am impatient so I would give up on it a few rows in. I think I may be able to show you next time I’m in town.
